Worldly Weird Things
3i, Alas
If you’re a budding astrologist or a conspiracy deep-diver, then you won’t need me to tell you, but for those who are unaware of our close call with the unknown, let me tell you –
We just missed out.
One of the most exciting, inexplicable and physics-defying space-oddities ever to be observed, has unfortunately, passed us by, unobserved.
For weeks, people in the space realm of the zeitgeist have been eagerly stroking their telescopes in anticipation of this mysterious cosmic giant passing by Mars, hoping to get our first real look at whatever it is. Sorry, what it was.
However, the tense position of the American government led to the shutdown of NASA, leaving the common man blind at this crucial moment in history, science.
Depending on where you look and who you listen to, there are few interesting takes on 3i/Atlas.
The most unsettling, in my opinion, was the recently ‘leaked’ 4chan post from a supposed astrophysicist currently researching the interstellar intruder.
In their thread, they claim that the only possible explanation for the object, is that it is a self-contained mass of primordial energy, left over from the big bang.
According to their theory, these quaintly named ‘Q-tips’ are a quantum mass flying through the galaxy, totally ignorant to the laws of our reality.
If this is the case, that supposedly means not only is everything we thought we understood about space and reality wrong by a factor of 20,000, it means there are probably hundreds of thousands of these ‘Q-tips’ floating around the universe at any given time.
I can’t say I know anything about physics, or the laws of reality, but something about it all gave me a skin-crawling feeling of existential dread.
The question of what 3i/Atlas was was just the beginning, surely?
Regardless of the truth, we know, for a fact, it is the biggest, fastest moving object ever recorded. On top of that, it is moving in a way that, according to our own rules, is impossible.
It’s producing unnaturally occurring chemicals, it doesn’t feel hot nor cold.
If you’re a believer, it’s hard not to believe that this could have been it, our moment with the others. How could we have missed it?
It seems like a sick coincidence that the interloping object happened to pass by when our best shot at revealing its nature was offline, what do you think?
Would they do that?….
